Primitive elephant, whose fossil remains have
been discovered in all the continents except
Australia, chiefly in deposits from the
Pleistocene Age in the USA and Canada. It
resembled the modern elephant, but was lower
and longer; its teeth suggest that it ate
leaves in the primeval swamps and forests.
